Most are perched at the highest points of the landscape, on mountaintops where the views stretch endlessly in every direction. Some are guardians of healing springs; one was carved from an ancient sacred rock, another from a tree. Each is deeply rooted in place. The Madonnas are entirely nature-based, chthonic, beloved by the local people, and honored with annual processions, feast days, and celebrations that carry on for days. This is a culture I know intimately and inhabit naturally. It is woven into me, an inheritance embedded deep in my blood, my bones, and my understanding of the sacred. In this painting I recognize the same sacred thread that runs through the mountain shrines, healing springs, and ancient pilgrimage sites of my ancestral homeland - a devotion inseparable from the land itself - not so much a portrait of a particular Madonna, but more a feeling, a living presence.

back to all prints

Originally created with acrylic & Terra di Colori paints.
